This post explains what steps need to be taken to prepare your home for the installation of your new tile or hardwood flooring.  Don’t just wait for the wood/tile floor installers to arrive and create havoc in your home.

Simple preparations and a little knowledge will make your project faster and help with all the dust, mess, fuss, and damage that wood floor installers will inevitably (and often unavoidably) cause. No matter what your floor installation company tells you the more you can do beforehand the better.

  1. Dust. Dust is the #1 problem when removing the floors you already have. Most floor installers will take minimum preparations to contain the dust. Not because they don’t care, but they do not have the tools needed to keep this dust under control. You can seal off rooms that will not be sanded, and cover the doorways and A/C vents with plastic and masking tape. If you would like to totally remove the problem of dust and time, call us for more information at (512) 774-0933
  2. Remove doors. Most floor installers will remove your doors but they will not safely store the doors. Here are some tips to help keep them safe: separating each door in the stack with a blanket and taking the doors to a room where the floors are not being worked on.
  3. Cover any wall portrait or decor. Any wall portrait, collectible, TV or decor that you are concerned about getting messed up or broken, cover it or take it out of the area being worked on. Even if you are going with dustless tile/floor removal it can never hurt to protect your things. When removing floors, especially tile, pieces of the floor or tile will fly as it breaks so it will give you piece of mind that your things are going to stay safe.

Dust control systems are relatively new in the floor removal industry. So you may have been told it is not possible or it is a waste of your time to look into it!

What should you believe? You are being told that your house is going to be a supper mess but that there is no other choice?  Or maybe you are being told that everyone uses vacuums on some of there equipment?

Okay! So first I will start by letting you know it’s not a waste of your time and also normal vacuums cannot handle thinset and concrete dust!

We have very high end vacuums that are designed for concrete dust.

The system we use and the equipment is not only great for dust elimination but our system of removing the thinset captures the dust at the source in every step of the process and it leaves a smooth and even slab ready for the next type of flooring or stain. There is not another company in Texas that can produce our final product! Our tools used with high powered vacuums can capture the dust and we cut prep time in half!

Here is what others are saying about us:
“I tried to save a buck by going with traditional tile removal. Aside from the fact the tile was chipping up VERY slowly, there was a tremendous amount of dust and debris all over our house. We had tile chips inside drawers, doors and in rooms there wasn’t even tile. About 1/4 into the project I called Austin Dustless Tile Removal. They were in and out in one day (the conventional method had already been working 2 days.) There was little to no dust, and no chips. They left the remaining slab clean, and areas around the house better than they found them. The cost was only a fraction more than traditional tile removal, and worth every single penny. I was working under a budget and thought that saving a small amount would be worth it, and it simply was not. I’m not usually a reviewer, but my experience with this company was so exceptional I felt compelled. There is no other way to go with tile removal than this!”
-K.N.

“We were very pleased with the results! We had over 1300 square feet of ceramic tile removed by Austin Dustless Tile Removal to make way for new wood floors and tile. We’ve heard horror stories about dust getting everywhere including inside cabinets so we sought out an alternative method. When we told our flooring and paint contractors that we had hired a dustless tile removal company, they thought we were crazy. They said it wasn’t possible. They were wrong. The Austin Dustless crew efficiently and quickly removed ALL of the tile AND thinset. Their equipment captures all of the dust which was hauled off with the old tile. After it was all complete, there was a very thin film of dust on the some of the surface areas which they wiped clean before leaving. Our contractors were also amazed at the results. We would highly recommend Dave and his team to our friends and family.”

Comparing Tile Floor Removal Methods: DIY, Day Labor, Installer, and Dustless Options

Are you planning to remove tile flooring but unsure which method to choose? In this guide, we’ll compare DIY, day labor, professional installers, and dustless flooring options to help you make the best decision for your project.

When it’s time to remove ceramic tile floors, you’ve got four choices to think about, each with its own pros and cons. Let’s look at them in more detail:

1. DIY (Do It Yourself)

Tackling Ceramic Tile Removal Solo

Pros:

  • No labor costs
  • Sense of accomplishment
  • No need to hire workers

Cons:

  • Messy and time-consuming
  • Quality can vary
  • Need to rent tools
  • Risk of harming the floor beneath
  • Tile disposal challenges
  • Physically demanding
  • Slow
  • Not dustless

Doing it yourself can be a rewarding experience, but it can get messy and physically demanding. It’s essential to remember that it can take time, require specific tools, and may involve some level of expertise to avoid potential issues.

2. Hiring Day Labor

Getting Tile Removal Help From Temporary Workers

Pros:

  • Access to experienced labor assistance
  • Potentially lower costs depending on your location

Cons:

  • Messy and time-consuming
  • Quality can vary
  • Need to rent tools
  • Risk of harming the floor beneath
  • Tile disposal challenges
  • Physically demanding
  • Uncertainty about the workers
  • Slow
  • Not dustless

Hiring day labor can be a practical option, but the quality of work and the reliability of workers can vary. It’s important to note that it’s not a completely dustless process.

3. Letting Your Installer Handle Removal and Installation

Have the installer do the Tile Removal and Installation

Pros:

  • Ensures quality removal for a smooth installation
  • Costs vary based on location and installer
  • Requires minimal personal involvement

Cons:

They will sometimes use a vacuum and claim “dustless‘ ‘ because it’s a little less dust but the fact is installation companies specialize in installation and have not invested the time or money it takes for the equipment needed to really be dustless! And they shouldn’t have too.

4. Hiring a Specialized Dustless Flooring Removal Company

Ceramic tile removed dust-free!

Pros:

  • Trained experts with dustless tile removal equipment
  • Quick and clean tile removal
  • Reduced dust and mess
  • Concrete is smoother and flatter for better tile installation
  • Costs vary, but the benefits are significant

Cons:

  • May seem to have higher costs.  (But you end up saving in the end)
  • Some dust remains, but it’s way less than traditional methods

Opting for a specialized dustless flooring removal company offers numerous advantages, including reduced dust and a smoother surface for new flooring. It’s particularly beneficial when upgrading your flooring.

In conclusion, while each method has its merits, considering the benefits of dustless removal is a smart move for a smoother, cleaner, and healthier flooring project.

You can ask anyone who has ever stripped a sealer or coating from a concrete surface and I would be willing to bet they will all tell you it was awful! The process of removing old, worn or failing sealers, stains or coatings from concrete, it can be one of the most miserable jobs a flooring professional will have to do. In some cases it is the only way to prepare, restore or repair a concrete floor.

Well with that said…We had this tough job to do today and it was not awful at all! Our system for removing sealers, stains or coatings from concrete is painless and fast.

It was a pool room that is being remodeled. The home owners are having tile put in and in order for the prep and thinset to hold, the sealer and the stain needed to be removed. The concrete slab was very bumpy surface with a lot of high and low spots. This can make tiling very difficult. We were able to knock down most of the high spots and flatten the concrete, which makes a much more aesthetic tile floor.

If you are looking at stripping sealer or coating from a concrete surface, give us a call. We can knock it out and we can do it fast!  We do not use any chemicals so it’s fast and clean.

Most people have around 24 electronic products in their home. These products can range from a refrigerator, to your personal home computer. When dust and dirt get into these products it will not do immediate damage but once these miniscule particles enter their systems, they eventually slow down or stop working.

How Does Dust Affect my Electronic Products?

  • Overheating through insulation
  • Moisture
  • Poor Conductivity
  • Thankfully, there are products, methods, and cleaning routines that can easily remove those particles out of your electronic appliances.

    Purchasable Items

Make sure that after you have used a product to clean your electronic products, that it will not leave any residue, emit greenhouse gases, or have the capability to damage your products any further.

Some of the items you may want to consider buying include:

    • Aerosol cans
    • Computer blower
    • Paintbrushes
    • Screen wipers
    • Cotton buds

Cleaning your appliances once won’t fix the dust problem. Most electronic products need to be routinely dusted in order for it to function well.

    ]]>
How hard can it be to remove a few floor tiles? Harder than you think, it will take longer then you think and it will be dusty. Even if you hire a tile company to come out and remove it for you, you are looking at the same steps and about to the same time frame. I would plan on a minimum of 3 days for any project to get done. Tile companies normally do not include clean up so that adds another day. (At Austin Dustless Tile Removal we can get up to 1500 square feet, with cleanup included, completed in one full day.)

    Should I Remove the Tiles?

You know that if you are wanting a new floor, the tiles that are already there will need to be removed. So what is the process and what should you expect?

Now before we get into the removing of tile, let’s have a look at how tiles are usually fixed to the slab.  A mortar-like mix called “thinset” glues the tiles to the slab. This is done by mixing the thinset, then using a tool to spread it onto the slab or the back of the tiles. The tiles are then laid and aligned using spacers. Once the thinset has bonded to the concrete the tiler will come back and put the grout between the tiles.

There are a few different types of thinset:

    • mortar like thinset, much like the mortar used between bricks. It may or may not crumble away when power tools are used on it.
    • fortified – like standard thinset, but tougher. It is getting closer to concrete strength.
    • flexbond – contains polymer, allowing for movement in the tiles. It may prevent cracking or lifting.

    Danger

If your tiles were laid prior to the 80’s, the thinset may contain asbestos. If there is a chance you have asbestos present, get it tested and call in the professionals. Tiles are not worth death or sickness.

How Do I Remove the Tiles?

Depending on how well the tiles are installed will depend on if they will start lifting easily. In some cases, It can be quite hard to get them up but getting the tile up is not the hard part. The thinset is another matter. It can be incredibly tough to shift.

Some people / companies use a rotary hammer drill, Trolley Mounted Demolition Hammer, or angle grinder with wire brush. These tools throw up a lot of dust but nothing like an angle grinder with diamond grinding wheel. This tool will turn everything in your house grey. At the very least you will want to cover everything you own with drop sheets!

There is some prep work that will be needed before we take on the thin set:

    1. Get the room protected with drop sheets or plastic. You will want to block doorways and furniture because removing thinset will throw up a ton of dust.
    2. Try and keep the dust confined to your work area.
    3. Make sure you wear a respirator or class 2 dust mask, along with hearing and eye protection!

Tip wear a hat or a cap. Concrete dust is hard to get out of your hair.

    Danger

Concrete/thinset dust is not nice stuff. It contains silicates which are known to cause various lung conditions and it’s carcinogenic too. Make sure you wear a respirator while working AND while cleaning up.

You will have a lot of broken tiles, a lot of dust, and big piles of thinset. If possible, rent a dumpster. If not, you are going to have to do a dump run. I have done this before and trust me you want to rent a Dumpster if at all possible!  Getting all Of this out of your truck is almost as much work as the entire floor.

To clean the room, follow this process (Ensure you have your dust mask on):

    1. Manually carry all the larger tile pieces out to your dumping pile
    2. Use an outdoor broom (the wider the better) to sweep up all the dust and thinset, then shovel it straight into a wheel barrow.
    3. Use your indoor broom to sweep up. The softer bristles should pick up a lot of crud.
    4. Use a shop vac to pickup anything remaining. You could use your regular vacuum, but don’t come crying to me if Mr Dyson explodes.
    5. Dust everything
    6. Mop.
    7. Change your air filters

This may seem excessive, but if you don’t follow these steps, you will have dust everywhere. You will be finding dust in 6 months time.

This will take about 3 or 4 full days depending on the size of the space. It could take longer but don’t count on it being less then 3 to 4 days. This time frame is not including clean up!

Before you go down this path really think about whether you have enough time and patience.

Tiled floors are known for quick and easy cleaning. However, just because it is easy to clean tiled floors, doesn’t mean that you do not need to clean them often. Seeing that tiles are very easy to clean, there is virtually nothing to stop you from keeping your space well-maintained.

Although most homeowners have mastered the art of tile cleaning, there are many people making the switch to natural cleaners for tile and grout. If you are one of those people, do not worry it’s incredibly easy and very inexpensive.

You most likely already have all the things you need to clean your floors. You also don’t have to worry about your kids bathing in chemicals after you clean the tub, or a toddler crawling around on a floor covered in carcinogens.

Natural Tile and Grout Cleaner Recipes:

    • Light cleaning of water spots or dirt – Get a damp sponge, dip in a bowl of regular baking soda and wipe down tub or tiles. Rinse with warm water.
    • Tough stains or set in dirt – Use a damp sponge in full strength white vinegar to wipe down entire surface. Immediately scour with baking soda and a brush or sponge.
    • Really tough stains and spots – Mix 1/2 cup baking soda with 2 TBSP of washing soda and 2 TBSP of borax. Add 3 TBSP of Liquid dish soap and stir. Pre-wipe with full strength white vinegar and scrub with baking soda mixture. For tubs, wipe with white vinegar, sprinkle with mixture and let sit for 15 minutes. Scrub with heavy-duty brush and rinse.
    • Moldy Grout Stains – For mold on grout make a mixture of 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) and 1 part water in a spray bottle. Spray on grout until saturated. Wait 45 minutes and wipe down with sponge and rinse well.

    An Even Better Option

    What you’ll need:
    •1/2 cup baking soda
    •1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
    •1 teaspoon liquid dish soap

    Directions:

    1. Simply mix together the baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap in a small squeeze-top container. Hydrogen peroxide is a natural whitener and cleaner, while baking soda helps scrub away stains and hard water buildup.
    2. Squeeze the mixture on grout or tile that is in need of a good cleaning and leave it on the area for five minutes. Or squeeze onto a soft sponge and use for cleaning your tub or bathroom shower tiles.
    3. Scrub then wipe away the cleaning mixture, rinsing with water. For deeper cleaning, allow the rock-star natural bathroom cleaner to sit for several minutes, or use a second application.

Other Homemade or Home Alternative Cleaners

If using a mop and vinegar solution isn’t working, you may also consider using the following:

    • Pencil Erasers
    • Tea Leaves
    • Steel Wool

Now you should go to that hardware store and get some non-toxic, eco-friendly grout sealer so you can ward off doing this for a few years. The sealer will tell you on the bottle how often to re-seal.

    Hope this helps!
