HOW TO REMOVE TILE FLOORING DIY

So you want to remove your own tile?  It’s not as easy as it may seem on TV or YouTube.   Keep in mind that we can knock out most jobs in just one day without the mess at Austin Dustless LLC, keeping it easy and worry free! But, if you really want to do it yourself, here are some floor tile removal tips.

STEPS TO DIY

Remove the Baseboards and Trim

The first step to removing tile is deciding what to do with the base boards and quarter round. Do you want to keep your baseboards?  If so, after the new flooring is put down you will need to add quarter round to hid the edge of the new flooring.  The installer will not be able to lay the new flooring under the baseboards.  If you are trying to save a little money, leaving the baseboards would be the way to go. But if your base boards are not in good condition anyway, you may want to just take them up and get new ones.

If you already have quarter round you will have to remove it prior to removing the old flooring.  To remove it without pulling paint from your base boards, use a utility knife to cut any paint or caulk along the seam.  Then gently pry the quarter round off with a pry bar, working against the floor, not prying against the wall of baseboard.  Do the same for removing the base boards.

Its not likely that you will be able to remove the base boards or quarter round carefully enough to reinstall them once the new flooring is installed. But you can always try.

Remove the Tile

Get your hammer and chisel out, for the fun is about to begin! Floor tile removal tips not to forget…First, there will be dust involved in the process.   A lot of dust!  You will want to cover any vents with painter’s tape and plastic to help keep dust from entering the ventilation system.  You can also turn your AC off to help keep the dust from making it into the your entire house.  Second safety is priority.  Broken tile edges are as sharp as glass, and pieces go flying. Don’t forget to put on a shield  or protective eye wear and wear heavy leather gloves.  Now start with the first tile,  break one apart with the hammer to get to the others. Once you have broken apart the first tile, you can then use the chisel to pry it up. Use the hammer and chisel to pop the rest of the tiles up by placing the chisel against the bottom edge of the tiles and using the hammer to apply pressure to hopefully pop the rest up.  If the floor is down really good, it can break in little pieces and can be quite the chore!

If the flooring area you are removing is very large or is coming up very slowly or if you like power tools, you can use electric tools to for quicker, more efficient work.  If you choose to use a power chipping hammer, be sure to angle it so you do not damage the slab.

Get your slab as smooth as you can.

It is important that your floor is properly prepped for your new flooring installation.  Be sure to remove any and all remaining adhesive and or thin set with a scraper.  If there is any old thin set left behind, it will cause uneven surfaces, potentially causing cracks and shortening the life of your new flooring.

We hope you find these Floor tile removal tips helpful.

How to remove old tile flooring?

Removing tile isn’t an easy project. It’s very labor intensive,  and it creates a big mess, but it’s also expensive to pay someone else to do.  We get calls almost weekly from people that started the removal themselves and stopped to call us.

Here are the main reasons:

#1 reason: The family is coughing and can’t stand the dust in their home any longer.

#2 reason: The floor is just not coming up easily enough, and after one to two weeks they are giving up.

#3 reason: They got all the tile up but could not get the thin-set.

You don’t save much when you hire someone to get only the thin-set up after the tile is gone.   The thin-set is much harder to get up most times than the tile, and it is priced accordingly.

We recommend keeping you and your family safe and healthy from the beginning, and have our dustless specialists take care of this for you.  We can do most jobs in one day and we leave your home as clean as we found it.

How do I remove glued-down hardwood?

Tearing up hardwood floors that have been glued directly to concrete will be an extremely messy and is very labor intensive.   The glue is sometimes seemingly impossible to get off.  This is why glued down wood is more expensive to remove than tile.  If the floor was a do it yourself  kind of installation, it may be the easier to remove, due to not enough or wrong adhesives used. You should be able to expect to pull up about 10 square foot per hour.  But what if it was installed by professionals?  Expect a glue removal nightmare!

Our recommendation is to keep you and your family safe and healthy by having our dustless specialists take care of this for you.  We can do most jobs in one day and we leave your home as clean as we found it.  This includes complete removal of wood and glue with a smooth, clean concrete slab ready for re-installation of your new floor.

How to remove decorative concrete stain, coating and paint from concrete?

Ask anyone who has ever stripped a sealer or coating from a concrete surface  with a chemical stripper what they thought of the process, and the general reaction will be it was complete misery.  The process of removing old or worn sealers and coatings from concrete ranks among one of the most miserable jobs even a professional may have to undertake.

There are two methods for removing sealers from concrete:

  • Chemical, using a chemical stripper to remove the the coating
  • Mechanical, which consists of grinding, blasting or sanding the coating off the surface

While both work, the mechanical method creates noise and dust, which can be difficult to deal with. This is why the most common method for removing sealers, paints or coatings from concrete is to use a chemical stripper.

Using our dustless equipment, we can grind the floor without the dust to keep you and your family safe and healthy. Our machines are still noisy, but we can do most jobs in one day and we leave your home as clean as we found it.  We leave you with a smooth, clean concrete slab ready for installation of your new flooring.

How to remove vinyl flooring, old linoleum or glue?

Removing an old linoleum or vinyl floor can sometimes be fairly easy, but what’s under it?  Glue! Noooooo!  Now you’re faced with gobs of old glue or adhesive that seem  almost impossible to get up.

Again, our recommendation is to keep you and your family safe and healthy and have our dustless specialists take care of this for you.  We can do most jobs in one day and we leave your home as clean as we found it.

Let’s talk about the cost of removing floors, but don’t worry; we’ll keep it simple.

Dustless floor removal can cost anywhere from $3.00 to $4.50 per square foot for ceramic tile. Some companies might offer a lower price, but be cautious, as they might be cutting corners by using less effective equipment and poorly trained staff.

Now, here’s where Austin Dustless stands out: we don’t include the cost of hauling your old flooring off in a dumpster or trailer in our per square foot price. This way, our clients and contractors can save money in two ways:

  1. If you’re planning a renovation and already have a dumpster on-site, you won’t pay twice for dumpster services.
  2. Many clients and contractors don’t always need to have a dumpster and so it doesn’t need to be included in the price. This means more savings for everyone.

In contrast, many other companies include these haul-off costs in their estimates, sometimes even making extra profit from this. At Austin Dustless, we never mark up the haul-off cost, ensuring you only pay for the services you receive.

Our pricing for ceramic floor tile removal ranges from $2.75 to $3.00 per square foot, and larger areas have lower costs. These prices are transparently listed on our website. No secrets or hidden fees; you’ll know you’re paying the same as all our other customers.

*Beware of companies that refuse to give you any pricing upfront!cost of removing floors, Dustless flooring

If you come across companies that refuse to provide any pricing information upfront and only talk negatively about others, be cautious. We believe in transparency and providing consistent pricing. If someone makes you wait for an in-person visit before giving you a reasonable idea of their cost of removing floors, it might raise some red flags.

At Austin Dustless, we offer a competitive price for dust-free removal, which has numerous advantages over traditional methods. Besides leaving no dust behind, our process is more efficient, allowing us to remove up to 1200 square feet in one day. Traditional removal methods can be slower, potentially leave behind adhesives, and even damage your concrete, leading to costly repairs or the need for a professional cleaning service At Austin Dustless we value the health of your children, pets, elderly parents, and you.

Call for a free estimate for dust-free removal before you finalize your remodel budget.

A slightly higher upfront cost of removing floors can translate to long-term cost savings and benefits.

What is the Austin Dustless system and how does it remove tile and other flooring Dust Free?

Our Dustless system and equipment were thoughtfully designed by David Schuh, a flooring industry professional in Austin, Texas. Concerned about his clients’ health and well-being, as well as his crew, David conducted extensive research and developed a system to remove flooring with minimal dust.

Wondering if tile removal is as messy as they say?Austin remodeling

Other companies claim they can provide clean tile removal. What is the difference in their equipment?

Now, you might hear other companies claim to provide clean tile removal. The difference with Austin Dustless is that our system is genuinely dust-free with OVER 99.5% of the dust captured while we work so it’s not just ‘less dusty.’ It’s not about cleaning up a mess afterward; it’s about capturing the dust before it spreads. Claiming to achieve 100% dustless is not realistic or truthful, and we believe in providing honest information.

The Austin Dustless floor removal system and equipment produces consistent, reliable, dust free results every time.

Our dustless professionals undergo extensive training and use specialized equipment, ensuring that the work is genuinely dust-free. It’s not just about the equipment; it’s about the careful process that makes it dustless. The Austin Dustless system consistently delivers dust-free results.

Lastly, if you’re considering new flooring, such as wood-look tile planks, luxury vinyl products, or high-end wood flooring, it’s important to have your existing flooring removed. Many of these materials require a flat and level surface, which is precisely what our process provides. This can save you time and money on additional preparation work.

Buying a home in or around Austin TX?  Here are some tips on home improvement projects to tackle before you get settled into your new house.

You’ve just bought your home or you are closing on it soon. You want to add some personal touches to make it your own, like painting the interior walls and installing new flooring. Most people recommend these home renovations should be done after you move in. This is so you can live in the house, get a good feel for it and then make the decisions on what you really want to do with it. Not a bad idea but some things are not going to change if you wait and would be so much easier if done first.

Why not get started before you move in? An empty house means your furniture won’t be in danger of paint, dust or other damage. Also you or your contractors can take advantage of an open space which can save time and money. Most importantly, you and your family can limit exposure to renovation dust and odors that can be hazardous to your health.

Try tackling these home improvement projects before the moving into your new-to-you home.

  1. Kitchen and or Bathroom Remodeling

There are many simple ways of personalizing and updating, outdated looks in any home.

    • New appliances
    • Countertops and vanities
    • Changing out fixtures
    • Changing out hardware

Classic hardware is a worthwhile upgrade or to give your bath a designer touch with matching accessories. New appliances that match will always make a difference and updating the countertops. Any one of these if needed will help subtly enhance the look and feel of the entire space. For cabinetry, look at stock or semi-custom options available from the big-box stores (such as KraftMaid at Lowe’s and Pegasus at Home Depot) or a kitchen-and-bath retailer. To snag a deal, ask about damaged or undelivered orders. Check Craigslist.org, too. If your cabinet is in good shape, you might want to replace just the top.

Health tip:If you are going with refaced cabinets, the formaldehyde glues will off-gas in your home for a long time, so choose cabinets labeled NAUF, which means no added urea formaldehyde. Make health a priority and ventilate the house.

  2. Flooring Installation & Refinishing

What kind of floors are in the home now and what look are you going for? New flooring feels clean and looks nice too. This is an easy way to add your personal touch and feel right at home when the moving truck arrives.

    • Tile
    • Carpet
    • Wood
    • Veneer or Laminate

In an older home, you might be lucky enough to find something salvageable underneath that old carpeting. Like wood that can be refinished!

Health tip: For all the DIY people reading this take precautions when prepping, sanding and applying the new finish.  Go to Tree House and find out what the best product is that is safe to use in a home. Make health a priority and ventilate the house.

If you chose to installing new carpet, be aware off-gassing again. Installing wool as opposed to synthetics may help but don’t forget to make health a priority. If the house already has carpet and you are going to keep it, be sure to get it professionally cleaned (you don’t even want to think of what is lurking within).

Remove that old tile! If your new home has old tile you would like to replace, definitely get rid of it before you move in.  Living in a house while tile removal is going one is not fun for anyone.

Health tip: The dust from tile removal is very unhealthy and is hard to get rid of. At Austin Dustless we help to help keep the dust from going airborne and getting into every part of your home including the ventilation system.

  3. Painting Walls

Changing the color is a simple project that can personalize your home for little cost.

    • Remove any unwanted color
    • Add color to a house with white everything
    • Add an accent wall to a room
    • Personalize an office or kids room

There’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint to improve the look and feel of a room. Finding the perfect paint color can change the way you feel about any room. Paint can make a room brighter, bigger, feel cleaner or it can make it feel dark and small. Again this is better to do before the home is full of furniture and wall art.

Consider these other tips to make your painting experience healthy for everyone in your home.

Health tip: Use fans and keep your windows open when painting to help prevent your home from filling up with paint fumes. Choose water-based over oil-based paint whenever possible. Keep pregnant women and young children away from freshly painted rooms. Let it air out for at least 3 days.
